As a real estate professional, many of the tips you might hear on how to run a successful business aren’t focused on who you are as an individual. The tip I’m sharing today, however, centers on exactly that.

Did you know that understanding your own personality is actually essential to being an effective real estate professional? 

Whether this comes as a surprise to you or not, you’re probably wondering how you can go about determining what type of personality you have. There are many different assessments out there, but today we’re going to focus on one that measures traits that relate to how we behave . I’m talking, of course, about the DISC assessment. 

This DISC assessment is named after the four characteristics it measures: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness. Knowing not only which of these four characteristics most closely describes your personality, but also which of these traits most closely matches the people you interact with can greatly benefit your business.

During a recent training I attended with Christy Belt Grossman, she shared an amazing analogy that describes how different traits within the DISC assessment can manifest: 

Think about how you behave in traffic. People within the Dominance category may be prone to weave in and out of lanes, making constant moves to get ahead. People in the Influence category, meanwhile, are those who you might see jamming out to music, waving to let people into their lane, and just generally having a good time. 

Those in the Stability category will tend to stick to a single lane, and will only move if they absolutely need to. These people will stay at a consistent speed without worrying about their position in traffic.

Lastly, there are the people who fall into the Conscientiousness category. These people have likely planned their day so carefully that they don’t wind up in traffic at all. Instead, they plan at least one alternate route. 

After considering this analogy, you’ve probably got an idea now of which category you belong to. What you might not recognize yet, though, is how this category comes into play in your professional life. Well, allow me to break it down.

D-type people tend to be very direct in their communication. If you fall into this category, realize that not everyone will want to be spoken to the way you might prefer. Some will take offense if communication is too blunt, so always consider the personality type of those you’re interacting with as you approach a conversation—especially when speaking with clients.

I-type people like to talk at length. If you’re an I-type talking to a D-type, though, realize that they won’t appreciate lengthy discussions. When dealing with D-type clients, it’s best to cut straight to the point. 

S-type people fall somewhere in between. They want enough information to make an informed decision, but still appreciate directness. 

Finally, C-type people want conversations about hard facts and data. They don’t care as much about the amount of information as they do the quality of it. 

The bottom line is that personality matters. You need to identify who you are and who your clients are as you approach every interaction. Being cognizant of this will greatly improve your business, overall.
